"DON'T GET DRUNK"

KC Wilkerson © 2005
CD Recorded Live in the studio
and Digitally Mastered.
The Story

One night when I was 15 my mom didn't come home. I fell asleep in a chair waiting for her and just before day break I heard a feeble knock at the door. When I opened it there stood a woman smeared with mud and covered with scratches and bruises. It took me a moment to recognize her. She had drunkenly decided to drag race with her boy friend on the way home from the bar after it closed around 2:00 am.

At over 90 miles an hour her right tires slipped off the right shoulder of the road sending her big four door Impala careening into a ditch. As the car spun she realized she was going to die and she just relaxed. She didn't even have her seat belt on. She was thrown about like a rag doll ending up in the back seat. The car's final impact with a large tree moved the engine over about a foot to one side. The transmission was detached and all the electrical wiring was ripped out disabling the car lights. Her keys were launched clean out of the car and were never found.

My mom was extremely battered, dazed and trapped in her car in the pitch black darkness. Her boyfriend who witnessed this terribly violent crash thought she must be dead. In a drunken stupor he drove off and went home without reporting the accident. He was afraid they would arrest him and hold him responsible for her death. He didn't even get out of his car he was so sure she had perished.

Eventually she managed to pull herself together and squeeze out of a broken window only to fall in two feet of mud. She was covered from head to foot as she desperately searched for her keys. Fearing she could be arrested too she stayed off the roads just in case a sheriff's car happened by. She walked over 10 miles to get home that night through dense underbrush and woods on the outskirts of town. After she came home she slept for two days. She never drove drunk again.

When I finally saw the car it was an obvious miracle she survived because the car was mangled. This story had a happy ending but many similar stories involving alcohol and automobiles don't. A friend of the family died last year from alcohol and high speeds. She was traveling late at night from a wedding and was in a hurry to get to another wedding the next day. She was 26 years old, an only child, and she had just gotten engaged the week before. She unbuckled her seat belt and crawled over the back seat to get some CDs. Right at that moment her best friend, who was driving, hit a guard rail. They were going over 100 miles per hour. The driver is facing 40 years to life in prison, she's 25. Their parents are devastated. The second wedding was postponed.

I performed this song for my mom years after her near tragic event. As a die hard country fan she said, "I definitely think you got a hit song. Get it out there, it might save some lives."

Dedicated to my Mom, the late JoAnn Hults-Wilkerson.
